Lucifer and the Schoolteacher:
The Trauma and Healing of Racism in American Education
After suffering emotional, psychological, and spiritual trauma while witnessing George Floyd’s tragic demise, Dr. Debra Hobbs was forced into confronting her internal demons-specifically, hatred. While contemplating how she could move forward into the future knowing that her mind and heart harbored such deep-seated resentment, anger, and disillusionment, Dr. Hobbs eventually decided to embark on a journey of self-discovery to explore why Lucifer had decided to briefly reside in her heart and compromise her humanity. Within a provocative memoir, Dr. Hobbs, an experienced teacher, shares her personal story while examining the deep wounds of racism that surround the African American culture in the United States. While exposing the emotional depths of her racialized experiences, Dr. Hobbs opens the door to redemption to encourage healing and acceptance of all differences and remind us that hatred is a choice we control. Lucifer and the Schoolteacher is the emotional narrative of an African American teacher who travels deep within to explore the abyss of hatred and racism to ultimately discover love in a new way.
Introducing: Book Therapy
A Literary Approach to Wellness and Healing
If we could draw a continuum of trauma, each and every one of us could be placed on this scale with discrete placements. Lucifer moments loom in the shadows of our existence. Some of us do not have an awareness or a sustainable means for a cathartic release of trauma. Therefore, some of us continually wrestle with circumstances beyond our control.
Dr. Hobbs |As A Book Therapist
I am not making a clinical or medical diagnosis. I am an experienced
literary artist who is encouraging and assisting in the free expression of
one’s heart. I use books to open the chambers of the heart so that
traumatic experiences are placed into a new context of understanding.
Conversations centered on books improve health and wellness. As you
“read” your life through the lives of “characters,” you begin to understand
life more fully. You discover ways to free heavy burdens associated with
life. Once you begin to unravel the complex layers of a character, you
learn problem solving techniques for your own reality. You question and
wrestle with histories, belief systems, familial legacies, cultural nuances
and self-understandings….just to mention a few areas. Books sessions
can transform you and begin the journey toward healing, renewal and
rebirth. I use literary techniques and spiritual understandings to unearth
your divine purpose. I am a member of the National Association of Poetry
Therapy, which promotes growth and healing through language, symbol,
and story.
